A redneck moves from the trailerhood to the suburbs for a little patch of dirt to call home and set up an as much as possible self sufficient lifestyle. Some things will go better than planned, others worse. Hopefully, most will at best be somewhere in between.

Moving Right Along
Well, not a whole heaping helping going on around here as of late. Just crazy ass weather; freezing one day and near record high temps the next.
I took my brother down to our step mom's tother day and we passed a dirt pit i.e. some fellers got a permit for "surface mining" and are digging a monstrous hole and selling the dirt from it. I've semi calculated the dirt I need to fill all the low spots and holes in my yard, raised bed & container gardens. I just need to find out is the soil sand, clay, what I call "dead dirt", lots of rocks and/or gravel or what before ordering a truck load. I don't expect potting soil quality product but don't want dead dirt with no life left in it whatsoever. Also I don't want to have a dug up Indian burial ground in my yard and gardens!
On the clothes dryer front, I've found a couple places with new machines for $299.99 and some used online for around $150.00. I can't help thinking soon a better deal will come along for a new machine. Meanwhile I use my clothesline as much as possible and in rainy weather I hang laundry as close as possible to the heater vents to get maximum use of heat when my heater is warming the house.
I'd mentioned earlier the idea of building a greenhouse out of scrap wood and windows my Mom had given me. The more I think on that the less appealing the plan seems. I'd need to shim a lot for level and square, buy stuff for roofing, door and some supports and the end product would not be aesthetically pleasing. A local tool store has a 6' x 8' greenhouse for a mere $300.00. That should be enough for starting my seedlings for not only my garden but my business as well.
Between the crazy weather, my health questions and family health issues, knobs I work with at my 40 a week job it's been a trying time but with God by my side I'll not only survive but thrive.

Starting More Plants
This morning while buying groceries, also called "making groceries" around here, I have no idea why, I picked up a bit of ginger root to try and sprout. From what I've read it shouldn't be that damned hard.
Almost forgot, last night a lady was thinking about buying a miniature rose but said she has no green thumb. She was talking to Ron who is not real clever on any subject and our young fella whose name I haven't yet taken time to learn. Anyway, I instructed her on how to finger test the soil for moisture, to put it a sunny window, etc before I noticed the little tab of instructions. She seemed most impressed that everything I sad was on the tab... Hell yeah!
Meanwhile I've started a few cups of lemon, apple & avocado seeds. The lemons & apples will hopefully go in the orchard and the avocados will be put up for sale once well established.
I don't spend much time at the old family homestead in Kilmichael but both my brothers seem enamored with the place. My older brother is having even more health issues than I am so I'll ask my younger for a favor. That being: search out some persimmon and sassafras trees and huckleberry bushes.

Super Bowl Sunday
It's now just about 8 hours and 40 minutes away from kickoff for Super Bowl LI and here are my predictions by quarter:
First Quarter: Both offenses will be cautious, not wanting to make the first mistake. Both defences will give up mid field yardage but be stingy in the Red Zone and only allow field goals. Score: Atlant 6, New England 3
Second Quarter: The offences open things up and Atlanta scores but one touchdown and a field goal to New England's pair of TD's.. Atlanta trails by a point at halftime, 16 - 17.
Third Quarter: Halftime adjustments have been made to both defences but Coach Belichick's are a bit better. Atlanta scores one touchdown and field goal and New England puts up another 2 TD's to lead
31 - 27.
Fourth Quarter: Atlanta scores another 10 points, possibly taking the lead into the final seconds but the Patriots respond with 10 of their own to win.
FINAL SCORE:
New England Patriots 41
Atlanta Falcons 37

Physical Exam Results
Well, I went for my physical the other day and got mixed answers. It seems I'm not in too bad health for a 57 year old who's been smoking for 40 years. The Doctor did hear something she didn't like in my guts. That being what could be an aneurism in my aorta down around my stomach area.
I'm scheduled for an ultrasound this coming Tuesday to check the condition of my aorta. Naturally I am a bit concerned but I do have the Good Lord watching over me.
Also they want to do a colonoscopy on me which I dread but as long as my insurance covers it and I probably need one (way overdue) I signed up for. I'm just not in any way looking forward to fasting, drinking the "go lightly" juice and having a camera shoved up my butt.
I do ask y'all pray that my results of the ultrasound and colonoscopy are as good as can be.
The best thing about my physical or "wellness exam" was they can test a prostate through blood screening. My doctor said it's supposed to be more accurate than the invasive, finger up the butt test. As long as they already had my blood and insurance covered it I said "Hell, yes! Run the test!"
I did go the the eye doctor the day after my physical and got mixed results again. My eyes are not much worse than before but I am slowly developing cataracts.Anyway, thank God for insurance. After insurance picked up their part of the bill I still had to pay over $300.
It ain't easy nor cheap getting old but I thank God for letting me get old.
