I measured the bale of straw Joel gave me then measured the bed of my truck; length, width and depth. After accounting for the wheel wells I figure I can fit 5 bales per layer and safely tie down 2 layers for transport back home. All I need do now is call for pricing & availability, then go fetch em up. I'm thinking another 5 or 6 should make the duck yard look pretty good and eliminate most of the sloppy spots while giving the birds good forage for seeds and their feed among the straw. Of course I'll continue adding bags of oak leaves as my neighbors put those to the curb.
My back yard has several wet areas, mostly where I walk it seems. Whatever straw don't go into the duck yard will be distributed along my soupy pathways and assorted sloppy areas. If the straw is cheap enough I may even break up and toss a bale or 3 onto the Swamp should I decide to buy a second truckload.
I broke up the bale I had and put a couple flakes in the nest house for the hens. The remainder I busted up and scattered in their yard. I'm seeing a lot of wild birds flying in for a snack. If I see a few more doves I may get out my 10 pump BB gun and do some dove hunting.
